Rejoice: It is hard to rejoice in these proceedings, as they demonstrate human sin in every aspect of life. Yet every part of this proves that you were innocent of any crime. You, Lord have seen the inner workings of our religions and politics and our own minds. Yet in all this you have continued in your love for us. We are rebellious creatures but you are a faithful God!
Thanks: We don’t fully understand the cross and all that you accomplished when you stood in our place. But we do know that we are forgiven, loved, and transformed by your sacrifice.
Confession: It was because of my sin that you went to the cross. Forgive me, and lead me in your perfect ways.
Asking: Save our world-let faith in you govern all our institiutions. Let all people everywhere practice your justice and mercy.
Crucifixion, Death and Burial:
Praise: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise! . . . “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!” (Revelation 5:12–13)
Thanks: Thank you for your mercy on the thief beside you. Though at first he mocked you, when he realized his fault and turned to you and you forgave him. Even there on the Cross you triumphed in love. Thank you for your mercy to me. Even before I believed, you were merciful. Now I know it is true and I am thankful.
Confession: I may be unaware of all my sins, I may even do what my worst when I think I am right. Father, forgive us, we know not what we do! If I have sinned unaware, reveal my fault so I can turn from it.
Asking: When I think of the many people today who suffer for your Name, who are persecuted for their faith, I pray that your will strengthen and encourage them. For if this was done to you, what will they do to your followers? Keep your people faithful through trials, so that the world may believe in you.
