Rev. Brian has asked me to write a short piece in order to introduce to you the course I will be offering.

It is my hope and prayer that this group will become the people to whom others will come and share their pain. We will learn how to listen and not judge. We will not help others to feel sorry for themselves, but challenge them to move closer to their pain until they discover that their pain can no longer defeat them, but in truth, they can defeat it.

I also believe that in all our learning and in all our work we need to remain constantly aware of the following words from Holy Scripture:

  • Trust God -- Romans 10:11 ―Whoever be-lieves in him will not be disappointed.
  • A Gift from God -- Luke 12:32 ―Don‘t be afraid little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the Kingdom.
  • A Word from Jesus --John 16:33 ―I have told you this so that you will have peace by being united to me. The world will make you suf-fer, but be brave! I have overcome the world!

We will also study some of the disciplines of counselling, and will  have the opportunity to practice some of these disciplines.

Let me close by saying that Spiritual Care is a ministry of healing, sustaining, guiding and reconciling.

The presence of  God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit promotes hope and healing. We practice the presence of God in the role of Spiritual Director and with God's help we can embrace others and prayerfully invite the very presence of God's transforming love into their lives.

PS: We will also have fun!

Rev. Baxter served our congregation for 17 years, and while he helps at Manotick United Church in his retirement, he will be offering a course in Spiritual care and Counselling here at St. Andrew's Rockland in the near future. Contact Rev. Brian Wilkie if you are interested
