On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and incense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. (Mt2:11012)
The Wise Men – Everything they did finding Jesus was the wrong thing. They consulted the stars to foresee the future, which, if they knew the Hebrew Law, God had forbidden.
They went to King Herod,
whom they thought to be the seat of all power in Israel, and we know what a disaster that was. Even the priests they consulted, who searched the Scriptures and came up with 'Bethlehem,' the town named in prophecy, those priests turned out to be Jesus' chief opponents later in life.
Yet somehow they reached the home where Jesus lay, and bowed down and worshipped him.
This Christmas, many who seek life will search in all the wrong places. Yet they may find Jesus, in a carol in a shopping centre, in a message on the radio, in a card sent with a Christian message, or in a late night communion service. They may have been searching for meaning, or fun, or happiness, they may have been “Searching for Love in All the Wrong Places.” but they come to the place where Jesus is they will find worship, salvation and life.
Like the wise men, they won't go back the way they came: Instead of following stars, or consulting wicked kings, they obeyed Jesus, listened to his messenger, and went home another way. We too can rejoice in the new way we have found in Jesus, walking in holiness, mercy and grace as we enjoy another Christmas Season.
God bless us, Everyone!
